Nintendo Gamecube

Nintendo has had many different home gaming consoles over the years. In 2001 they came out with a new version of the Nintendo. This new version was labeled the Nintendo Gamecube. It was meant to compete against Sony Playstation 2 and XBOX. The main difference between the three new consoles on the market was the disc size. Nintendo Gamecube had a mini DVD technology rather than a full sized disc.

Gamecube also had the ability to connect to other consoles like the Gameboy Advance. This enabled home gamers to play their favorite games without having to purchase the game again. The shape of the Gamecube is partially why it is named. In other words the system is a cube shape, thus Gamecube made sense. Like other game consoles the Nintendo Gamecube was given an external memory for saving games. The controller is also different than the other consoles. It has analog, the direction pad, and the abilities pad, but it is a larger controller, with easier places for the thumb to work.

Part of the success of the Nintendo Gamecube was the marketing of the product. Nintendo had several different campaigns that showed the Nintendo Gamecube off. Another reason for success was the games. Nintendo was not releasing any of their games for other consoles. In other words if you wanted to play any of the Mario Brothers games you had to purchase the Gamecube or have an older version of Nintendo products.

XBOX and Sony Playstation had some of the same games, which helped keep consumers happy. The fact that Nintendo was unwilling to share was a minor issue because it meant a whole new system had to be purchased. The other factor in the games was the size of the disc. The mini DVD would not work in older versions of the Nintendo gaming consoles.

The most popular games for Nintendo were always the Mario Brothers releases. The original Mario Brothers, Super Mario, Super Mario World and many others were re-released for the Gamecube over the years. They also came out with Mario Cart. Super Mario Cart was quite the game upon first release. It was at the time the top game sold for Nintendo. Then the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee occurred. Super Smash Bros. is now the all time best selling game for Nintendo Gamecube, with 7 million games sold in the US and world.

Today the Nintendo has come out with another system called Wii. The Wii is more about fitness with interactive games, which certainly helps inspire more individuals to buy it. The Nintendo Gamecube will still remain a top gaming console though for the simple fact that players’ favorite games like Super Smash Bros. can be played with the older machine. Many of the games from Nintendo arcade days are also being recreated in online downloads. This allows players to experience games from the past which still require a bit of skill. While newer games have better graphics there is nothing like playing the first Mario game again.
